We are MPHSTs!
Welcome to our site! We are a group of current MD-PhD trainees pursuing graduate degrees in the social sciences and humanities. Misfits! In short, we created this group to help prospective students understand the application process to the MSTP, and to bring together current trainees across the varied programs to foster our small yet mighty community.
Our small group of junior MD-PhD Anthropology trainees banded together after meeting in Los Angeles at the 2022 National Conference for Physician Scholars in the Social Sciences and Humanities. In discussing our recent experiences of figuring out how to apply to these programs and lack of ability to create community among the far-flung trainees in this path, we decided to create this site as a way to address both of these gaps.
We hope this site can be a useful space for those considering or currently applying to the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) with plans for a social science or humanities PhD, where information about timelines, specific materials for non-traditional PhDs, eligible programs, and more has been traditionally hard to come by and distributed largely by word of mouth. We also hope that for those who are already in this joint degree path, this site can work as a magnetic force to create community among us. If you would like to join our group of trainees and gain access to more resources like member lists, zoom sessions, group writing, and more, shoot us an email at the bottom of the page - we would love to get to know you.
